CMFAS M9 practice questions, with answers and explanations

Ten practice questions for CMFAS M9 (Life Insurance and Investment-Linked Policies), each with its answer and a worked explanation in English and Chinese.

We wrote these questions ourselves from the Singapore College of Insurance (SCI) study text, 7th Edition, Version 1.2. They are for practising the material and are not taken from any exam paper. Every explanation cites the chapter and paragraph it rests on, so you can check it against the text.

How to use these questions

Answer each question before you open its explanation. When you get one wrong, read why the option you chose is wrong, not only why the answer is right, then look up the paragraph cited.

The questions come from ten different chapters. The exam itself has 100 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, with a pass mark of 70% (CMFAS M9 format, syllabus and fees).

Question 1

Chapter 1: Risk and Life Insurance

A company decides not to buy group medical insurance. Instead, it pays its employees' medical bills out of its own income each year. Which method of dealing with risk is the company using?

  1. Avoiding the risk
  2. Controlling the risk
  3. Retaining the risk
  4. Transferring the risk
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C. Retaining the risk

Why C: the company is keeping the whole financial responsibility for the medical bills itself. That is retaining the risk, also called self-insuring (Ch 1 §3.5).

D is the tempting one. Transferring the risk means shifting the financial responsibility to another party, usually for a fee, and buying insurance is the most common way to do it (§3.6). The company has chosen not to do that. Avoiding (§3.3) would mean not facing the risk at all, and controlling (§3.4) means taking steps to prevent or reduce losses.

Question 2

Chapter 4: Traditional Life Insurance Products

Wei Ming owns a convertible Term Insurance policy. His health has since worsened, and he would be declined if he applied for new life insurance today. He converts the policy to a Whole Life Insurance policy within the period his insurer allows. Which statement is correct?

  1. He must first provide evidence of insurability, and the insurer may refuse the conversion
  2. He can convert, but the new premium will be loaded for his worsened health
  3. He can convert without evidence of insurability, and the new premium can reflect his increased age but not his worsened health
  4. He can convert only if his health has not changed since the Term Insurance policy was issued
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C. He can convert without evidence of insurability, and the new premium can reflect his increased age but not his worsened health

Why C: a convertible Term Insurance policy lets him move to a permanent policy without evidence of insurability, so he can convert even though he would be declined for new cover today. His worsened health cannot push the new premium up; of the changes in his own risk, the insurer may price only for the age he has reached (Ch 4 §2.31).

A and D both make the conversion depend on his health, which is exactly what the option removes. B is wrong because the new premium cannot be loaded for his worsened health.

Question 3

Chapter 5: Riders (or Supplementary Benefits)

Mrs Lim pays the premiums on a policy that insures her 8-year-old son. The policy has a Payor Benefit Rider with a specified age of 21. Mrs Lim dies when her son is 10. What does the rider provide?

  1. The sum assured is paid to her son at once
  2. All future premiums are waived until her son reaches age 21
  3. The policy becomes a paid-up policy with a reduced sum assured
  4. All future premiums are waived for the rest of the policy term
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B. All future premiums are waived until her son reaches age 21

Why B: if the person paying the premiums on a juvenile policy dies or becomes disabled before the child reaches the specified age, the insurer waives all future premiums until the child reaches that age (Ch 5 §1.142). Here that is until her son turns 21.

D goes too far: the waiver stops at the specified age, not at the end of the policy term. A is wrong because the life insured is the son, not Mrs Lim, so her death does not pay the sum assured. The rider waives premiums; it does not change the policy into a paid-up one, so C is wrong.

Question 4

Chapter 6: Participating Life Insurance Policies

Which statement about the terminal bonus on a participating policy is correct?

  1. It is added to the sum assured every year while the policy remains in force
  2. It is added only when the policy terminates, and is not added to the sum assured of a policy that remains in force
  3. It is paid to the policy owner in cash every year
  4. It fluctuates less than the reversionary bonus
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B. It is added only when the policy terminates, and is not added to the sum assured of a policy that remains in force

Why B: a terminal bonus is added on top of the reversionary bonuses when the policy terminates, by maturity, death or surrender, and usually only if the policy has been in force for a minimum period (Ch 6 §2.17 to §2.18). Unlike a reversionary bonus, it is not added to the sum assured of a policy that remains in force (§2.20).

A describes a reversionary bonus. C is wrong because a terminal bonus arises only when the policy terminates, not every year; a yearly cash payment is closer to a cash dividend (§2.22). D is the reverse of what the study text says: terminal bonuses are likely to fluctuate more than reversionary bonuses (§2.21).

Question 5

Chapter 7: Investment-linked Life Insurance Policies (ILPs): Types, Features, Benefits and Risks

What does a premium holiday on a regular premium investment-linked policy (ILP) allow the policy owner to do?

  1. Stop paying the regular premium for a period, for as long as the policy's surrender value is enough to cover its charges
  2. Stop paying the regular premium for a period, during which no charges are deducted from the policy
  3. Withdraw units from the policy without any charge
  4. Switch between sub-funds without any charge
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A. Stop paying the regular premium for a period, for as long as the policy's surrender value is enough to cover its charges

Why A: a premium holiday lets the policy owner stop paying the regular premium for a period, for as long as the surrender value of the policy is enough to cover the policy's charges (Ch 7 §16.17).

B is the trap. The charges do not stop: they are the reason the surrender value has to be enough, and the insurer may also levy a premium holiday charge for using the feature (§16.18). C and D describe a withdrawal and a sub-fund switch, which are different features.

Question 6

Chapter 9: Investment-linked Life Insurance Policies: Computational Aspects

A single premium ILP is bought with a premium of S$12,000, and the whole premium is used to buy units. On the day the premium is received, the offer price is S$2.00 and the bid-offer spread is 5%. How many units are purchased, and what is the bid price?

  1. 6,000 units; bid price S$1.90
  2. 5,700 units; bid price S$2.00
  3. 6,000 units; bid price S$2.10
  4. 6,315.79 units; bid price S$1.90
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A. 6,000 units; bid price S$1.90

Why A:

Step 1: units are bought at the offer price. Number of units = single premium ÷ offer price = S$12,000 ÷ S$2.00 = 6,000 units.

Step 2: the bid price is the offer price less the spread. Bid price = (1 − 5%) × S$2.00 = 0.95 × S$2.00 = S$1.90.

This is the method of Example 9.4 (Ch 9 §6.4).

B takes the 5% off the number of units and leaves the price alone. C adds the spread to the offer price, but the bid price is the lower of the two. D divides the premium by the bid price: S$12,000 ÷ S$1.90 = 6,315.79, but units are bought at the offer price.

Question 7

Chapter 11: Application and Underwriting

Ravi receives his new Term Insurance policy on 3 March. He decides he does not want it and returns it to the insurer on 10 March. What will he receive?

  1. A full refund of the premium paid, with no deduction
  2. A refund of the premium paid, less any cost the insurer incurred in assessing the risk
  3. No refund, because the policy has already been issued
  4. The surrender value of the policy
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B. A refund of the premium paid, less any cost the insurer incurred in assessing the risk

Why B: a policy owner has 14 days from the date he receives the policy to go through it. If he returns it within that free-look period, he receives a refund of the premium paid, less any cost the insurer incurred in assessing the risk (Ch 11 §1.39). Ravi returned his policy 7 days after receiving it, so he is within the 14 days.

A is the tempting one. A full refund is what a proposer gets when the insurer rejects his proposal form, which is not what happened here. C ignores the free-look period. D is wrong because a free-look return is a refund of premium, not a surrender.

Question 8

Chapter 12: Policy Services

A policy has not yet acquired any cash value. The policy owner does not pay the premium within the grace period. What happens to the policy?

  1. It lapses
  2. It becomes a paid-up policy for a reduced sum assured
  3. It stays in force indefinitely until the next premium is paid
  4. It is surrendered and the premiums paid are refunded
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A. It lapses

Why A: a policy lapses when premiums are not paid within the grace period and the policy has not yet acquired any cash value (Ch 12 §12.1).

The other case the study text gives is a policy on Automatic Premium Loan whose cash value has been exhausted (§12.1). Either way, a policy with no cash value left and an unpaid premium does not stay in force, so C is wrong. B and D describe outcomes the paragraph does not give for an unpaid premium.

Question 9

Chapter 14: The Insurance Contract

The renewal premium on a life policy fell due on 1 June and has not been paid. The policy gives a grace period of 30 days. The life insured dies on 15 June. Under the grace period wording the study text gives as an example, what is the position?

  1. No claim is payable, because the premium was not paid by its due date
  2. The claim is payable, and the insurer deducts the unpaid premium from the amount payable
  3. The claim is payable in full, and the unpaid premium is waived
  4. The claim is payable only if the premium is paid before the grace period ends
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B. The claim is payable, and the insurer deducts the unpaid premium from the amount payable

Why B: during the grace period the life insured continues to enjoy the insurance cover. Under the example wording, the policy continues in force, and if a valid claim is made during the grace period the insurer deducts any unpaid premium from the amount payable (Ch 14 §8.14). 15 June is 14 days after the due date, inside the 30 days.

A treats the cover as ending on the due date, which is what the grace period prevents. C is wrong because the unpaid premium is deducted, not waived. D adds a condition the wording does not have.

Question 10

Chapter 15: Law of Agency

An insurance agent does something outside his authority. The insurer later decides to accept the act and to treat the agent as having acted for it from the time the act was done. What is this called?

  1. Estoppel
  2. Ratification
  3. Waiver
  4. Termination of agency
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B. Ratification

Why B: an insurer is not bound by something its agent does beyond the agent's authority. It can, however, choose to adopt the act afterwards and treat the agent as having acted for it from the time the act was done. The study text calls this ratification, the validation of an unauthorised act, and the insurer can ratify in words, written or spoken, or by its conduct (Ch 15 §7.1).

None of the other three is the acceptance of an unauthorised act after the event, which is what the question describes.
